What Feelings Remain

He sat outside his cabin, beer in hand, and thought back to the conversation from earlier that afternoon. Did she understand the way she still affected him? Just the sight of her in those jeans and that t-shirt had started his heart hammering.

He opened another beer, craving the alcohol. Had he meant what he’d said about the dog? Or was that just bitterness at her betrayal?

She needed him. Could he refuse her? Even though she no longer felt as he did, his feelings remained the same. It was all that had ever mattered.

He went inside to shave.
